I highly recommend the film Naked City (1948) by Jules Dassin. What sets this New York City murder mystery apart from other films is the narration, which mirrors your traditional documentary and it creates an aura that this story could potentially be real, thus the audience is drawn into the action. I also found the characters to be quite enjoyable, especially the lead detective Dan Muldoon (played by Barry Fitzgerald) as his quirky and calm exterior is very accessible and not too intimidating. Also, his young associate Jimmy Halloran (played by Don Taylor) is pretty easy on the eyes.
To quote the ending of the film, “There are eight million stories in the Naked City. This has been one of them.”
Quite true, and a story that is worth while!
