Now this is a change I can definitely get behind. The last two-year, the Best Picture category at the Academy Awards nominated 10 films for Best Picture, and I honestly felt that some of them were just fillers to round out the required number. It has now been announced that this category can nominate anywhere between 5 to 10! Brilliant!
Academy executive director Bruce Davis said,
“In studying the data, what stood out was that Academy members had regularly shown a strong admiration for more than five movies. A Best Picture nomination should be an indication of extraordinary merit. If there are only eight pictures that truly earn that honor in a given year, we shouldn’t feel an obligation to round out the number.”
This means directors are going to have to earn their nomination rather than lucking out with it because there was a certain quota that needed to be reached. Hopefully there will be some animated films in the running!
